Break disks and break pads a commonly used for breaking in vehicles. They are mostly made out of cast iron. Obviously, cast iron is less strong and hard than steel, however it is more flexible. The last thing you want to happen is for the break disk to break under pressure. The key requirement for break pads and break disks is to provide breaking action, so the graphite, contained in cast iron, comes in very helpful. For this reason cast iron is preferred for usage in breaks over steel and other strong materials.
